Pepin Family Foundation

 Nonprofit & Philanthropic Foundation

Pepin Family Foundation is a family-led nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life throughout the Tampa Bay region. Its work focuses on education, health care, mental health wellness, transportation initiatives, and direct community support. The organization’s philanthropic work began in the 1980s through the involvement of the Pepin family. It was later formalized as Pepin Family Foundation, Inc. Since its early years, the foundation has continued to support programs that address practical needs within the community while maintaining a steady commitment to service.

Historical Origins and Family Legacy

The background of the Pepin Family Foundation is closely connected to the experiences and values of the Pepin family. Long before the organization was formally created, Art and Polly Pepin were already involved in charitable efforts throughout the Tampa Bay area. Their early work reflected a strong interest in supporting organizations that provided opportunities for residents.

During the late 1980s, a serious health event within the Pepin family brought increased attention to heart health and access to medical care. The experience highlighted the importance of specialized cardiac care and encouraged continued efforts to improve cardiovascular services in the region. In response, the family’s efforts began to extend beyond personal concerns and gradually developed into broader support for community health initiatives.

Tom Pepin worked alongside his parents and played an important role in organizing the family’s charitable activities into a more structured effort. One of the earliest steps involved the creation of a memorial fund in honor of Tom Pepin’s close friend, Chris Fredo. What began as a tribute later grew as more community needs became visible. Through ongoing participation and support, this early effort eventually developed into the organization known today as the Pepin Family Foundation.

Mission, Vision, and Core Principles

The Pepin Family Foundation operates with a mission to support education, health care, transportation, and mental health and wellness services. Many of these programs focus on professionals working in front-line roles, including individuals serving in public safety, emergency response, and health care.

The foundation’s long-term vision includes expanding access to specialized education for individuals with learning disabilities, strengthening cardiac care and research, and supporting mental health and wellness programs for first responders and their families.

Organizational Structure and Operations

The Pepin Family Foundation, Inc. operates in the nonprofit and philanthropic sector with a focused internal structure. Although the organization maintains a small staff, its work reaches a broad network through partnerships with hospitals, schools, public safety agencies, and nonprofit organizations across the Tampa Bay region.

The foundation’s operational approach emphasizes cooperation and direct participation. Members of the family remain involved in governance and maintain relationships with organizations that work alongside the foundation to support community programs.

Leadership and Governance

Leadership within the Pepin Family Foundation reflects its multi-generational structure. Tom Pepin serves as the founder and remains involved in the organization’s work. His long-standing presence in the Tampa Bay community contributes to the foundation’s understanding of local challenges and community needs.

The family also expanded its governance by establishing the Pepin Family Office. This office assists with managing philanthropic giving and reviewing organizations that align with the family’s priorities for long-term impact and financial stewardship. Former Senate President Tom Lee manages the office.

Tina Pepin serves as Executive Director and represents the next generation of leadership within the organization. Her responsibilities include overseeing daily operations, ensuring alignment with the foundation’s mission, and guiding responsible growth. In addition to her leadership role at the foundation, Tina Pepin serves on several community boards and advisory groups.

She also serves as secretary for the Pepin Academies Foundation and participates in the AdventHealth West Florida Division Mental Health Advisory Committee and Tampa’s Cultural Assets Commission.

Advancing Heart Health and Medical Care

Heart health has remained a major focus of the Pepin Family Foundation since its early years. In 1986, Tom Pepin and Arthur Pepin made matching pledges totaling $500,000 to support the development of a specialized cardiac facility. This commitment helped support the creation of the Pepin Heart Hospital and the Dr. Kiran C. Patel Research Institute.

Today, the Pepin Heart Hospital is recognized for its advanced cardiovascular services and is considered one of the leading specialty digital hospitals in the Southeast region.

Education and Individualized Learning Initiatives

Education remains an important part of the foundation’s mission. In 1999, Pepin Academies was established to support students with learning disabilities who needed a more individualized educational environment. The program began with 13 students and focused on both academic instruction and life skills development.

Pepin Academies operates as a nonprofit, tuition-free public charter school serving students from third through twelfth grade. The program also provides a transitional job-training initiative for young adults ages 18 to 22. Over time, the school expanded significantly and now serves more than 1,200 students while graduating more than 850 individuals.

Mental Health and Resiliency Programs

As awareness of mental health challenges has grown, the Pepin Family Foundation has expanded its support for mental health wellness and resiliency programs. These initiatives focus particularly on individuals working in demanding environments, including professionals in health care, law enforcement, and emergency services.

Community Giving and Strategic Partnerships

Beyond its main program areas, the Pepin Family Foundation continues to support a wide range of community initiatives. The foundation works with hospitals, educational institutions, nonprofit organizations, and public safety agencies that contribute to community development throughout the Tampa Bay region.

Organizations supported by the foundation include AdventHealth Tampa’s Pepin Heart Hospital, Pepin Academies, the Chiefs of Police Foundation, the Tampa Police Department and RISE Tampa, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, Moffitt Cancer Center, the Crisis Center and 211 Hope Line, Arise Alliance, Able Trust, Hands Across the Bay, Hook A Hero, Leadership Tampa Bay, the Hillsborough Education Foundation, and the Women’s Conference of Florida.

Recognition and Community Impact

The Pepin Family Foundation has served the Tampa Bay community since the 1980s and has received recognition for its continued involvement in charitable work. Among these honors is the RCG Community Impact Award, which recognizes organizations that strengthen the region through sustained engagement. Through ongoing partnerships and responsible giving, the organization continues to support programs that benefit individuals and families throughout the Tampa Bay area.
